In order to gain more social capital on one of the largest current social media platforms available, Instagram, I have devised a way that users can socially hack the network in order to gain more followers. What sets this method apart from more conventional forms of hacking is the use of teamwork between other Instagram users. The form of social hacking that I am suggesting relies on other Instagram users to work together to gain more followers.
Hacking Instagram
In order to socially hack Instagram to get a user more followers, I would create an app which would use the Instagram database to allow people to follow and unfollow people at will, this system would not disturb the Instagram servers as third party apps that allow people to mass unfollow and follow people on Instagram exist. There would be a function in the app called “follow users”, and this function would create a list of all the other users on my app and allow a user to follow all of them. For every two people that you follow on my app, you get a point, and for every point you have, you appear on someone else’s “follow users” list. Basically I would be creating a marketplace for Instagram follows, every time you follow someone, you are essentially earning credit which can be used to “buy” yourself followers.
